The client begins to describe a lengthy stay in Warsaw about five years earlier. When he names a celebrated woman he met there, Holmes keeps his eyes closed and asks Watson to consult his index. He has Watson find the entry so that the woman’s career can be read aloud.

"The facts are briefly these: Some five years ago, during a lengthy visit to Warsaw, I made the acquaintance of the well-known adventuress, Irene Adler.「手短に言えば、事実はこうだ。五年ほど前、ワルシャワに長く滞在していたとき、私はあの名高い妖婦、アイリーン・アドラーと知り合った。
