After hearing Holmes's reply, Alice turns toward Lestrade. The two investigators do not share the same view, but her own conviction remains firm. The conversation moves to the quarrel with his father that James refused to explain at the inquest. Holmes asks about the circumstances she herself knows and how she was involved in that disagreement.

"I think that it is very probable."「
"There, now!" she cried, throwing back her head and looking defiantly at Lestrade.「
He gives me hopes."
Lestrade shrugged his shoulders.
"I am afraid that my colleague has been a little quick in forming his conclusions," he said.「残念ながら、私の同業者は少々結論を急いだようだ」と彼は言った。
"But he is right.「でも、この方が正しいのです。
Oh!
I know that he is right.
James never did it.
And about his quarrel with his father, I am sure that the reason why he would not speak about it to the coroner was because I was concerned in it."
"In what way?" asked Holmes.「
