Watson tries to check the description Holmes has given, taking its features one at a time. What can be learned from the marks a person leaves while walking? After naming the points he can understand for himself, he asks his friend for the basis of a conclusion that has not yet been explained. Holmes's answer is unexpectedly simple.

"His height I know that you might roughly judge from the length of his stride.「背の高さなら、歩幅の長さから、おおよそ見当が付くのは分かる。
His boots, too, might be told from their traces."ブーツも、その跡から分かるだろうね」
"Yes, they were peculiar boots."「
"But his lameness?"「
"The impression of his right foot was always less distinct than his left.「右足の跡は、いつも左足ほどはっきりしていなかった。
He put less weight upon it.
Why?
Because he limped—he was lame."脚を引きずっていたからだ。脚が悪かったのだよ」
"But his left-handedness."「
