In the inn's sitting room, Holmes and the visitor discuss the letter that has been delivered. The visitor apparently has something he first wants to establish. Holmes faces both his words and his searching gaze and answers quietly. With Watson also present in the room, the conversation between the two men begins to unfold.

"Yes, the lodge-keeper brought it up.「ええ、門番が届けてくれました。
You said that you wished to see me here to avoid scandal."醜聞を避けるため、ここで私に会いたいと書いてありましたね」
