Watson meant the missing bridegroom, not the chemical experiment, and repeats his question. This time Holmes answers directly. Watson begins to ask who the man was and what purpose lay behind the disappearance, but before he can finish speaking, heavy steps approach along the passage outside the room as the expected appointment begins.
