The envelope received by John’s father bears not only three letters but also a brief instruction. John repeats the conversation that followed. What documents does the message mean, and where is the sundial it mentions? Through their questions and answers at the table, father and son respond to the strange warning in very different ways.

"'What papers?「『何の書類だ。
What sundial?' he asked.
"'The sundial in the garden.「『庭の日時計だよ。
There is no other,' said I; 'but the papers must be those that are destroyed.'
"'Pooh!' said he, gripping hard at his courage.「『ふん』と父は、懸命に勇気を奮い起こして言いました。
'We are in a civilised land here, and we can't have tomfoolery of this kind.『
Where does the thing come from?'
"'From Dundee,' I answered, glancing at the postmark.「『ダンディーからだよ』と、私は消印を見て答えました。
"'Some preposterous practical joke,' said he.「『途方もない悪ふざけだ』と父は言いました。
'What have I to do with sundials and papers?『
I shall take no notice of such nonsense.'
