John explains that he has already told the police about his situation. How did they understand the connection between the letters and the events that befell his family? Holmes asks further questions, seeking to learn what precautions have been arranged and whether they offer John any real protection at this moment.

"But they listened to my story with a smile.「ですが、私の話を笑みを浮かべて聞いていました。
I am convinced that the inspector has formed the opinion that the letters are all practical jokes, and that the deaths of my relations were really accidents, as the jury stated, and were not to be connected with the warnings."
Holmes shook his clenched hands in the air.
"Incredible imbecility!" he cried.「
"They have, however, allowed me a policeman, who may remain in the house with me."「もっとも、警官を一人つけてはくれました。
"Has he come with you to-night?"「
"No.「いいえ。
His orders were to stay in the house."
Again Holmes raved in the air.
