After studying the paper, Holmes returns it to John. He says there is something that must be done immediately, before they spend time discussing the case further. John asks what action he should take. Their conversation moves from reconstructing past events to deciding on a specific measure that must be carried out that very night.

"Thank you!" said Holmes, folding up the paper and returning it to our visitor.「ありがとうございます」とホームズは紙を畳み、来客へ返しながら言った。
"And now you must on no account lose another instant.「さて、もう一瞬たりとも無駄にしてはいけません。
We cannot spare time even to discuss what you have told me.今のお話を話し合う時間さえ惜しい。
