Using the advertisement, Spaulding explains the League’s supposed origin. It was founded through the estate of Ezekiah Hopkins, an American millionaire who was himself red-haired. Hopkins left his fortune in trust so that its interest could provide easy employment for men with the same coloring. Wilson wonders why such an offer would not attract millions of applicants.

"'But,' said I, 'there would be millions of red-headed men who would apply.'「『でも』と私は言いました。『それじゃ、赤毛の男が何百万人も応募してくるだろうに』
