After thinking all day, Wilson grows suspicious. Such a will seems impossible, and no sensible person would pay a large salary merely to copy an encyclopedia. He decides that the offer must be a fraud or elaborate joke. Even so, the next morning he buys ink, a quill, and paper and goes to Pope’s Court to test it.

"Well, I thought over the matter all day, and by evening I was in low spirits again; for I had quite persuaded myself that the whole affair must be some great hoax or fraud, though what its object might be I could not imagine.「それで、一日じゅうその件を考えていたのですが、夕方にはまた気がふさいでしまいましてね。

However, in the morning I determined to have a look at it anyhow, so I bought a penny bottle of ink, and with a quill-pen, and seven sheets of foolscap paper, I started off for Pope's Court.
