Holmes acknowledges Wilson’s dissatisfaction and promises that they will try to uncover the truth about the mysterious League. Before offering any conclusion, he says that he must ask one or two questions. Wilson straightens himself and waits. Holmes’s brief, rapid questions turn away from the office and toward the assistant who first found the advertisement.

"We shall endeavour to clear up these points for you.「そうした点は、私たちが解き明かすよう努めるとしよう。
And, first, one or two questions, Mr. Wilson.
This assistant of yours who first called your attention to the advertisement—how long had he been with you?"
"About a month then."「その時で、ひと月ほどでした」
"How did he come?"「どういういきさつで来たのかね?」
"In answer to an advertisement."「
"Was he the only applicant?"「
"No, I had a dozen."「
"Why did you pick him?"「なぜ彼を選んだのかね?」
"Because he was handy and would come cheap."「
