Wilson chose Spaulding from about twelve applicants because he was capable and inexpensive. Holmes now asks for a precise physical description of this man who is content with half wages. Wilson describes his build, movements, and face. One particular detail in the answer makes Holmes sit up with sudden interest.

"At half wages, in fact."「
"What is he like, this Vincent Spaulding?"「
"Small, stout-built, very quick in his ways, no hair on his face, though he's not short of thirty.「小柄で、がっしりした体つきで、動きがとてもすばしこくて、もう三十にはなるのに、顔にひげが一本もありません。
Has a white splash of acid upon his forehead."
Holmes sat up in his chair in considerable excitement.
"I thought as much," said he.「やはりそうか」と彼は言った。
"Have you ever observed that his ears are pierced for earrings?"「
He told me that a gipsy had done it for him when he was a lad."
