After hearing the assistant’s description, Holmes sinks back into his chair and thinks deeply. He checks whether Spaulding still works at the shop and whether business continued normally during Wilson’s absence. Satisfied with the answers, Holmes promises to communicate his view within a day or two and prepares to dismiss the client.

"Hum!" said Holmes, sinking back in deep thought.「
"He is still with you?"「彼は今もあなたのところに?」
"Oh, yes, sir; I have only just left him."「ええ、おりますとも、ついさっき店で別れてきたばかりでして」
"And has your business been attended to in your absence?"「
"Nothing to complain of, sir.「文句のつけようもありませんよ。
There's never very much to do of a morning."朝のうちは、もともとたいした仕事もありませんしね」
"That will do, Mr. Wilson.「もう結構だ、ウィルソンさん。
I shall be happy to give you an opinion upon the subject in the course of a day or two.
To-day is Saturday, and I hope that by Monday we may come to a conclusion."今日は土曜日だから、月曜までには結論が出せると思う」
