The scene changes completely when Holmes and Watson turn the corner from quiet Saxe-Coburg Square. They enter one of the main roads carrying people and goods north and west from the City. Carts choke the roadway and hurried pedestrians darken the pavement. It seems almost impossible that this busy commercial street touches the shabby square behind it.
The road in which we found ourselves as we turned round the corner from the retired Saxe-Coburg Square presented as great a contrast to it as the front of a picture does to the back.ひっそりとしたサックス・コバーグ・スクエアから角を曲がって出た通りは、絵の表と裏ほどにも、あの広場とは対照的だった。
It was one of the main arteries which conveyed the traffic of the City to the north and west.そこは、シティの人と物の流れを北と西へ運ぶ大動脈の一つだった。
