Merryweather is startled by the idea of waiting in total darkness. Holmes reveals that he brought playing cards because four men would have made the banker’s usual game possible. The enemy’s preparations are too advanced, however, and the light cannot remain. Treating the criminals as bold and dangerous, Holmes assigns each man a hiding place.
