The prisoner coolly praises Holmes’s skill even while being held in the cellar. When Jones approaches with handcuffs, the man objects in an arrogant tone. His pride remains untouched despite capture, and he expects to be treated according to his own exalted view of himself. Holmes and Watson watch the exchange unfold.
