Notes Scene 15: The Speckled Band

Notes on this scene

Julia staggers into the corridor, collapses in Helen's arms, and convulses in terrible pain. She cries out that it was a band—the speckled band—and points toward Dr. Roylott's room before another spasm cuts off her words. Roylott rushes out and tries brandy and medical help, but Julia never regains consciousness and dies slowly.

〜られてしまいました combines passive interruption with しまう: another convulsion cut Julia's words off completely before she could explain whom she was pointing toward.
ふらついていました shows Julia swaying unsteadily back and forth. The comparison to a drunkard makes her loss of bodily control vivid.
ゆっくりと describes Julia's gradual decline after she fails to regain consciousness.
だった is the past form of だ. Julia identifies what she saw as a band or cord: ‘It was a band.’

Background

brandy as first aid
Victorians commonly gave brandy as a stimulant to someone who had fainted or suffered a shock, believing it would restore warmth and consciousness.

Full text: original English and Japanese translation

By the light of the corridor-lamp I saw my sister appear at the opening, her face blanched with terror, her hands groping for help, her whole figure swaying to and fro like that of a drunkard. I ran to her and threw my arms round her, but at that moment her knees seemed to give way and she fell to the ground. She writhed as one who is in terrible pain, and her limbs were dreadfully convulsed. At first I thought that she had not recognised me, but as I bent over her she suddenly shrieked out in a voice which I shall never forget, 'Oh, my God! Helen! It was the band! The speckled band!' There was something else which she would fain have said, and she stabbed with her finger into the air in the direction of the Doctor's room, but a fresh convulsion seized her and choked her words. I rushed out, calling loudly for my stepfather, and I met him hastening from his room in his dressing-gown. When he reached my sister's side she was unconscious, and though he poured brandy down her throat and sent for medical aid from the village, all efforts were in vain, for she slowly sank and died without having recovered her consciousness. Such was the dreadful end of my beloved sister."

Next scene: Whistle and Clang

When Helen finishes describing Julia's last moments, Holmes begins asking questions. Is she certain about the whistle and the metallic sound heard that night? Helen says the coroner asked the same things. Holmes then questions her closely about Julia's clothing and the objects found in her hands, listening for every precise detail.
