夕食後の応接間で、ホールダーは高貴な客の名を伏せたまま、貴重な宝冠を家に預かっていることをアーサーとメアリーに話した。保管場所を尋ねた息子に、父は自室の机に錠を掛けたと答える。家族の会話はまだ終わっていない。

"'Oh, any old key will fit that bureau.「ああ、あの机なら古い鍵は何でも合いますよ。
