アーサーは、父の机は物置の古い鍵でも開いたと子ども時代の話をした。その後、ホールダーの部屋まで付いてきた息子は、目を伏せて二百ポンドを貸してほしいと頼む。クラブで面目を保つには必要な金だという。父はその頼みを聞いている。
