メアリーは、外出許可を得ていないルーシーが裏口から入るのを見たと叔父へ告げる。女中が脇門で誰かに会ったのではと気にしながらも、戸締まりはすべて済んだと答え、二人は寝室へ戻る。
表現・文法のポイント
- "'Tell me, dad,' said she, looking, I thought, a little disturbed, 'did you give Lucy, the maid, leave to go out to-night?'
- looking, I thought, a little disturbed は、動揺しているように見えたというホールダー自身の受け止めである。give Lucy leave は、ルーシーへ外出許可を与えることをいう。
- I kissed her and went up to my bedroom again, where I was soon asleep.
- where は直前の my bedroom を受け、そこでほどなく眠ったと続ける。again は、戸締まりの確認後に階上の寝室へ戻ったことを示す。
