呆然としたホールダーが四千ポンドの小切手を振り出すと、ホームズは三つの緑柱石が付いた金の角を差し出す。依頼人が歓喜して抱き締める中、ホームズは金銭とは別に果たすべき義務が残ると厳しく告げる。
表現・文法のポイント
- With a dazed face the banker made out the required check.
- made out the required check は、求められた金額を記入して小切手を振り出したことをいう。with a dazed face は、事情を理解できず呆然とした表情を表す。
- "There is one other thing you owe, Mr. Holder," said Sherlock Holmes rather sternly.
- one other thing you owe は、金とは別に負っているものがもう一つあるという意味である。rather sternly は、喜ぶ依頼人に対しても厳しい調子を保つ。

With a dazed face the banker made out the required check. Holmes walked over to his desk, took out a little triangular piece of gold with three gems in it, and threw it down upon the table.
銀行家は呆然とした顔で、求められた小切手を切った。ホームズは机へ歩み寄り、三個の宝石がついた小さな三角形の金片を取り出し、机の上へ投げ出した。
With a shriek of joy our client clutched it up.
