ホームズは、アーサーがメアリーを庇いながら窓の外へ出て、宝冠を持ち去った男を追ったと説明した。雪の上で二人が宝冠を引き合うなかで一角が折れ、息子は残りを持って家へ戻ったという。ホールダーは、自分の目撃とは全く違う意味を聞かされる。
