伯爵は、事が醜聞になればボヘミアの世襲の王家オルムシュタイン家が深く傷つくと明かす。ホームズは目を閉じて椅子に沈み込み、驚く客に向かって「陛下」と呼びかける。
表現・文法のポイント
- of great delicacy
- of＋抽象名詞は形容詞と同じ働きをし、of great delicacy は very delicate（きわめて微妙な）に当たる。of importance＝important と同じ型で、改まった、重々しい響きになる。
- seriously compromise one of the reigning families
- compromise はここでは「妥協する」ではなく「（評判・立場を）危うくする、傷つける」。reigning は「現に王位にある」の意で、reigning families は今まさに国を治めている王家を指す。
- no doubt depicted to him as
- no doubt は「きっと、疑いなく」という副詞的な挿入。had been depicted は過去完了の受動態で、客がここに来る前からホームズは名探偵だと聞かされていたことを表す。期待と目の前のけだるい姿との落差が笑いを誘う。

"The circumstances are of great delicacy, and every precaution has to be taken to quench what might grow to be an immense scandal and seriously compromise one of the reigning families of Europe. To speak plainly, the matter implicates the great House of Ormstein, hereditary kings of Bohemia."
