紳士の馬車が走り去った直後、今度は小型の四輪馬車が着き、美しい女性が家から飛び出して乗り込む。彼女もまた聖モニカ教会へ急ぐよう命じた。ホームズは通りかかった辻馬車に飛び乗り、後を追う。時刻は十二時二十五分前。何が起ころうとしているのか、ホームズには察しがついていた。
