馬丁に変装したホームズの語りは続く。辻馬車を急がせて聖モニカ教会に着くと、二台の馬車はすでに入口に止まっている。中では二人が白い法衣の牧師と祭壇の前で何やら言い合っている。暇人を装って側廊を進むホームズに、突然ゴドフリー・ノートンが駆け寄ってくる。

"My cabby drove fast.「私の乗った辻馬車は飛ばした。
I don't think I ever drove faster, but the others were there before us.あれほど速く馬車で走ったことはないと思うが、それでも二人のほうが先に着いていた。
The cab and the landau with their steaming horses were in front of the door when I arrived.私が着いたとき、湯気を立てる馬をつけた辻馬車と四輪馬車が、入口の前に止まっていた。
