ホームズの種明かしが続く。騒ぎの最中に赤い絵の具で顔を汚してけが人を装い、狙いの居間へ運び込まれたのだという。
表現・文法のポイント
- when the row broke out
- row はここでは「列」ではなく「騒ぎ・けんか」で、発音は「ラウ」になる。break out は戦争・火事・騒動などが「急に起こる」こと。主にイギリス英語の口語だ。
- a little moist red paint in the palm of my hand
- moist は「湿った」で、まだ乾いていない絵の具のこと。palm は「手のひら」。顔に手を当てたときに血のように見せるための小道具で、ホームズの周到さが分かる。
- That also I could fathom
- 目的語 That を文頭に出した倒置で、「それくらいは私にも分かった」と強調している。fathom は本来「水深を測る」で、そこから「（物事の奥まで）推し量る・理解する」という意味になった。
