エンジェルは再び家を訪れ、継父が戻る前に結婚しようと申し込む。そして、何が起きても自分に誠実でいると、メアリーに新約聖書に手を置いて誓わせる。母ははじめから彼の味方だった。メアリーは、継父にも知らせておきたいと、フランスのボルドーへ手紙を書く。
