電報は、翌日の正午にウィンチェスターのブラック・スワン亭へ来てほしいと告げていた。ホームズはすぐ列車を調べるよう頼み、ワトソンも同行を申し出る。朝の便なら間に合うと分かり、二人は短い休息ののち出発することを決める。

"Just look up the trains in Bradshaw," said he, and turned back to his chemical studies.「ブラッドショーで列車を調べてくれ」と彼は言い、化学実験へ戻った。
