おじが手紙を受け取ることは、ふだんほとんどなかった。ジョンは、一八八三年三月のある朝の食卓を思い出す。そこには外国の切手を貼った封書が置かれていた。遠い土地からの便りを前に、おじは何を考えたのか。暖炉の前の二人は、青年の回想の続きを聞く。
