数ある船の記録の中から、一隻に目を留めたホームズ。ワトソンは、その船名から考えられることを口にする。次に確かめるべきなのは、ほかの港に残った記録だ。日付と寄港地を照らし合わせながら、ホームズは、その日の調査で行った照会を順に説明していく。
