散策の帰りに、一行はメリピット荘で昼食をとる。これまでワトソンが会った人々を、今度はヘンリー卿も知ることになる。館の外での交流が続く。ヘンリー卿のそばを離れないようにというホームズの頼みは、日々の付き合いにも関わっている。

On our way back we stayed for lunch at Merripit House, and it was there that Sir Henry made the acquaintance of Miss Stapleton.帰りにメリピット荘へ寄って昼食をとり、そこでヘンリー卿はステイプルトン嬢と知り合った。
