五人分の食卓を前に、ホームズは何人か客が来るだろうと答えた。その一人であるセント・サイモン卿はまだ到着していない。やがて階段に足音が響き、午後よりも動揺した表情の卿が221Bへ入る。ホームズから届いた伝言が彼を驚かせている。

"The best possible."「これ以上ないほど確かです」
Lord St. Simon sank into a chair and passed his hand over his forehead.セント・サイモン卿は椅子に沈み込み、額を手でなでた。
"What will the Duke say," he murmured, "when he hears that one of the family has been subjected to such humiliation?"「一族の者がこのような屈辱を受けたとお聞きになれば、公爵は何とおっしゃるだろう」と彼はつぶやいた。
