各地の鉱山から届いていたフランクの便りは、先住民の襲撃を伝える新聞記事を最後に途絶えた。ハティは彼の死を信じ、長く病んだ末、ロンドンでセント・サイモン卿との結婚を受け入れている。妻として務める決意を持ち、式の日に祭壇へ進んだ。
