この場面の解説
厚紙には「赤毛組合は解散いたしました」とだけあり、ホームズとワトソンは思わず大笑いする。腹を立てて帰ろうとするウィルソンを、ホームズは引き止め、貼り紙を見つけてから何をしたのかと尋ねる。
表現・文法のポイント
- It read in this fashion:
- read はここでは「（文面が）～と書いてある、～と読める」という自動詞で、過去形も read（発音はレッド）。in this fashion は「このように」で、fashion は「流行」ではなく「やり方、様式」の意味だ。
- so completely overtopped every other consideration that
- so ～ that … は「とても～なので…」。overtop は「上回る、圧倒する」。事の滑稽さが、依頼人への気づかいなど、ほかのあらゆる考えをすっかり押しのけてしまい、とうとう笑いだしてしまったという流れだ。
- burst out into a roar of laughter
- burst out into ～ は「どっと～しだす」で、こらえていたものが一気にあふれる感じ。a roar of laughter は「とどろくような大笑い」。burst out laughing とも言える。
