この場面の解説
広場の角を曲がると、そこはシティから北と西へ向かう交通の大動脈だった。車道は人と荷の流れでふさがり、歩道は急ぐ人々であふれている。この立派な商店街が、さびれた広場と裏で接しているとは、ワトソンには信じがたい。
表現・文法のポイント
- presented as great a contrast to it as the front of a picture does to the back
- as great a ～ as … は「…と同じくらい大きな～」。形容詞が a の前に出る語順に注意。「絵の表と裏ほどの対照を見せていた」という意味で、does は presents の代わり。表通りと裏の広場の落差を、絵のおもて面と裏面にたとえている。
- one of the main arteries
- artery は本来「動脈」。都市の大通りを、血液を運ぶ動脈にたとえた言い方で、日本語の「交通の大動脈」と同じ発想だ。続く conveyed the traffic（交通を運んだ）や stream、tide も、流れのイメージでそろえてある。
- the footpaths were black with the hurrying swarm of pedestrians
- be black with ～ は「～で黒々としている」、つまり「～でびっしり埋まっている」。swarm は虫などの「群れ」で、急ぎ足の人々を群がる虫にたとえている。footpath はイギリス英語で「歩道」の意味にもなる。
- It was difficult to realise
- realise は realize のイギリス式の綴り。ここでは「気づく」より「実感する、本当だと思える」の意味。It was difficult to ～ that … で、「…ということは、なかなか実感できなかった」となる。

- 大文字で始まる the City は、ロンドン発祥の地で、銀行や商社が集まる金融・商業の中心地区「シティ・オブ・ロンドン」を指す。昼は大勢の勤め人で混み合うが、住む人は少なかった。
全文の対訳
The road in which we found ourselves as we turned round the corner from the retired Saxe-Coburg Square presented as great a contrast to it as the front of a picture does to the back. It was one of the main arteries which conveyed the traffic of the City to the north and west. The roadway was blocked with the immense stream of commerce flowing in a double tide inward and outward, while the footpaths were black with the hurrying swarm of pedestrians. It was difficult to realise as we looked at the line of fine shops and stately business premises that they really abutted on the other side upon the faded and stagnant square which we had just quitted.
ひっそりとしたサックス・コバーグ・スクエアから角を曲がって出た通りは、絵の表と裏ほどにも、あの広場とは対照的だった。そこは、シティの人と物の流れを北と西へ運ぶ大動脈の一つだった。車道は、内へ外へと二筋の潮のように流れる商いの大きな流れでふさがり、歩道は急ぎ足の人々の群れで黒々としていた。立派な商店や堂々たる商社の建物が並ぶのを眺めていると、それらが裏側で、たった今あとにしてきた、さびれてよどんだ広場に接しているとは、なかなか実感できなかった。
