ホームズは角に立って、大通りに並ぶ店の順番を確かめる。ロンドンを正確に知るのが趣味だという。仕事を終えた彼は、軽く食事をしてから、赤毛の依頼人に悩まされることのない音楽の世界へ行こうと言う。
表現・文法のポイント
- It is a hobby of mine
- a hobby of mine は「私の趣味の一つ」。a と my は並べて使えないので、a ～ of mine の形にする（a friend of mine と同じ）。ホームズは、ロンドンの街を正確に知っておくことを、道楽として楽しんでいる。
- it's time we had some play
- It's time ＋ 主語 ＋ 過去形 で「もう～してよいころだ」。had は過去形だが、意味は今のこと（仮定法過去）。work と play を対にして、「仕事は済んだから、そろそろ遊ぼう」と言っている。
- then off to violin-land
- off to ～ は動詞を省いた口語で、「～へ出かけよう」。violin-land は「ヴァイオリンの国」という造語で、これから聴きに行く音楽会の世界を、おとぎの国のように言っている。
- to vex us with their conundrums
