ホームズは、質屋が寝床に入るまで少なくとも一時間はあると言い、ここがロンドンの大手銀行の、シティ支店の地下室だと明かす。重役会の会長メリーウェザーは、狙われているのは銀行のフランスの金貨だとささやく。
表現・文法のポイント
- they can hardly take any steps
- hardly は「ほとんど〜ない」という否定の副詞なので、not を重ねない。take steps は「手段を講じる・行動を起こす」。「連中はほとんど何の手も打てない」つまり、質屋が寝るまでは動けないという意味だ。
- the sooner they do their work the longer time they will have
- the＋比較級 〜, the＋比較級 … は「〜すればするほど、…」の構文。「仕事を早く済ませるほど、（逃げる）時間が長く持てる」となる。ここでは二つの部分の間のコンマが省かれている。
- as no doubt you have divined
- divine は動詞で「（直感で）見抜く・言い当てる」。as you have divined で「きみが察したとおり」、no doubt は「きっと」。形容詞の divine（神の・神聖な）と同じつづりだが、ここは動詞である点に注意。

Mr. Merryweather is the chairman of directors, and he will explain to you that there are reasons why the more daring criminals of London should take a considerable interest in this cellar at present."
