Notes Scene 51: A Long Silence

Notes on this scene

After a long silence, Holmes opens the door and abruptly orders the broken, terrified Ryder to leave. The scene establishes this development clearly and closes before the next step begins, preserving the original passage's order and the limits of what the characters know at this point.

Full text: original English and Japanese translation

There was a long silence, broken only by his heavy breathing and by the measured tapping of Sherlock Holmes' finger-tips upon the edge of the table. Then my friend rose and threw open the door.

"Get out!" said he.

"What, sir! Oh, Heaven bless you!"

"No more words. Get out!"

And no more words were needed. There was a rush, a clatter upon the stairs, the bang of a door, and the crisp rattle of running footfalls from the street.

Next scene: After It All

After the long silence, calm returns to the Baker Street sitting room. Only the fire burns softly in the winter night. Holmes reaches for his familiar clay pipe and, with Watson as his attentive listener, begins to explain his view of how this strange affair should finally be brought to an end.
