Notes Scene 26: When Will She Send It?

Notes on this scene

Adler has said she will send the photograph when the engagement is publicly announced, on Monday. Holmes says they have three days and welcomes the time because he has other important work. The King is staying at the Langham under his assumed name. Holmes promises to write with news of progress.

公, read おおやけ, means the public or public sphere.
差し上げる is the humble form of “give.” Its polite volitional form offers to send something to the King.
でならない intensifies an involuntary feeling: “cannot help being.” The King says he cannot stop worrying.

Background

Langham Hotel
Opened in 1865 near the northern end of Regent Street, the Langham was one of London’s leading grand hotels. Its standing made it an appropriate place for an incognito king to stay under an assumed name.
Three days remaining
The original says that the following Monday is three days away, although March 20 was a Tuesday, making it six days away. The story’s chronology contains inconsistencies; the translation keeps the original number.

"You are sure that she has not sent it yet?"

"I am sure."

"And why?"

"Because she has said that she would send it on the day when the betrothal was publicly proclaimed. That will be next Monday."

"Oh, then we have three days yet," said Holmes with a yawn. "That is very fortunate, as I have one or two matters of importance to look into just at present. Your Majesty will, of course, stay in London for the present?"

"Certainly. You will find me at the Langham under the name of the Count Von Kramm."

"Then I shall drop you a line to let you know how we progress."

"Pray do so. I shall be all anxiety."
