Irene Adler asks whether the fallen gentleman is badly hurt. People in the crowd shout conflicting answers, arguing over whether he is still breathing or beyond help. Leaving him lying in the street seems impossible. When the bystanders ask what to do with him, she responds immediately to their request.

"Is the poor gentleman much hurt?" she asked.「
"He is dead," cried several voices.「
"No, no, there's life in him!" shouted another.「いや、いや、まだ息があるぞ!」
"But he'll be gone before you can get him to hospital."「
"He's a brave fellow," said a woman.「
"They would have had the lady's purse and watch if it hadn't been for him.「この人がいなかったら、奥様は財布も時計も取られていたよ。
They were a gang, and a rough one, too.
Ah, he's breathing now."
"He can't lie in the street.「通りに寝かせておくわけにはいかねえ。
May we bring him in, marm?"
