Notes Scene 33: The Morning Carriage

Notes on this scene

As the party leaves at nine, Lestrade reports that Turner is gravely ill and unlikely to recover. His health had already declined, and the tragedy has affected him badly. Lestrade also reveals that Turner let McCarthy occupy Hatherley Farm without rent and helped him in many other ways. Holmes finds the information interesting.

Japanese in this scene

とおり
After a plain-form clause, とおり means ‘just as.’ The clear morning matches what Holmes predicted. It introduces agreement between an earlier statement and what actually happens.
Plain form + そうだ reports information from someone else: ‘is said to be very ill.’ This differs from 悪そうだ, without い, which describes how someone appears to the speaker.
Verb stem + 切る can mean to complete an action fully. Its potential negative, 切れない, means the acts of help are too numerous to count completely. ほど emphasizes their great number.

There was no rain, as Holmes had foretold, and the morning broke bright and cloudless. At nine o'clock Lestrade called for us with the carriage, and we set off for Hatherley Farm and the Boscombe Pool.

"There is serious news this morning," Lestrade observed. "It is said that Mr. Turner, of the Hall, is so ill that his life is despaired of."

"An elderly man, I presume?" said Holmes.

"About sixty; but his constitution has been shattered by his life abroad, and he has been in failing health for some time. This business has had a very bad effect upon him. He was an old friend of McCarthy's, and, I may add, a great benefactor to him, for I have learned that he gave him Hatherley Farm rent free."

"Indeed! That is interesting," said Holmes.

"Oh, yes! In a hundred other ways he has helped him. Everybody about here speaks of his kindness to him."

Next scene: A Discussion on the Road

The carriage draws nearer to Hatherley Farm. From what he has heard about the relationship between the two households, Holmes puts a question to Lestrade. They disagree, however, about how the facts should be interpreted. With Watson between them, the exchange continues, moving between questions, confident assertions, and the differences in their approaches to the case.
