Notes Scene 35: At the Farmhouse

Notes on this scene

The comfortable farmhouse looks subdued, with lowered blinds and smokeless chimneys. At Holmes's request, the maid brings the dead man's boots and a pair belonging to his son, though the latter are not the ones worn during the incident. Holmes measures them carefully, then asks to see the yard before following the path toward the pool.

住み心地 means comfort as a place to live. よさそう is the appearance form of よい: it looks comfortable, rather than being something the narrator has personally lived in and tested.
もの stands in for the boots already mentioned. The modifying clause 履いていた identifies those worn at the relevant time, and ではなかった explicitly says the displayed pair was different.
Verb in the て form + ほしい expresses wanting someone else to do something. Holmes asks for another person's guidance rather than saying that he himself wants to guide the party.

"Yes, that is it." It was a widespread, comfortable-looking building, two-storied, slate-roofed, with great yellow blotches of lichen upon the grey walls. The drawn blinds and the smokeless chimneys, however, gave it a stricken look, as though the weight of this horror still lay heavy upon it. We called at the door, when the maid, at Holmes' request, showed us the boots which her master wore at the time of his death, and also a pair of the son's, though not the pair which he had then had. Having measured these very carefully from seven or eight different points, Holmes desired to be led to the court-yard, from which we all followed the winding track which led to Boscombe Pool.

Next scene: Across the Meadows

On the path from the farm to the pool, Holmes looks very different from the man who sits thinking in Baker Street. He keeps his eyes on the ground, moving forward and stopping as he goes. Watson and Lestrade follow behind him, but the investigation taking place before their eyes does not inspire the same response in each of them.
