Notes Scene 36: The Bell-Pull

Notes on this scene

Seated in the bedroom, Holmes lets his eyes travel over every corner before asking Helen about the thick bell-rope hanging beside the bed. He checks where it leads, when it was installed, and who requested it. He then turns from the rope to a close examination of the floorboards and wall panelling.

でしょうね invites confirmation of a reasonable assumption: Holmes supposes that Julia requested the bell-pull.
なるほど marks Holmes's recognition of the oddity: he now sees that such an impressive bell-pull seems unnecessary.
しばらく shows that Holmes studies the bed steadily for some time before tracing the wall with his eyes.
ついに means ‘eventually’ here: after examining the room in silence, Holmes at last asks about the bell-pull.

Background

bell-pull
A bell-pull operated a wire leading to a servants' bell elsewhere in a large house. A person in bed could pull it to summon assistance.

Full text: original English and Japanese translation

"Where does that bell communicate with?" he asked at last pointing to a thick bell-rope which hung down beside the bed, the tassel actually lying upon the pillow.

"It goes to the housekeeper's room."

"It looks newer than the other things?"

"Yes, it was only put there a couple of years ago."

"Your sister asked for it, I suppose?"

"No, I never heard of her using it. We used always to get what we wanted for ourselves."

"Indeed, it seemed unnecessary to put so nice a bell-pull there. You will excuse me for a few minutes while I satisfy myself as to this floor." He threw himself down upon his face with his lens in his hand and crawled swiftly backward and forward, examining minutely the cracks between the boards. Then he did the same with the wood-work with which the chamber was panelled. Finally he walked over to the bed and spent some time in staring at it and in running his eye up and down the wall. Finally he took the bell-rope in his hand and gave it a brisk tug.

Next scene: Where the Rope Hangs

After inspecting the floor and walls, Holmes picks up the bell-rope beside the bed and gives it a strong pull. He studies the point where it is fastened and peers closely at the small fitting above it. Helen and Watson watch without speaking as his examination of the room continues.
