Notes Scene 40: A Saucer of Milk

Notes on this scene

Holmes points out the saucer of milk on the safe. Helen explains that the house has no cat, although her stepfather keeps a cheetah and a baboon. Holmes appears satisfied with the answer and moves on to examine the seat of a wooden chair in the room. The scene begins from this carefully established point.

ありがとう is Holmes's brief thanks after receiving the information he requested, before he continues examining the unusual objects in the room.
もちろん expresses sudden recognition: Holmes now sees the obvious significance of the object in front of him.
それでも concedes that the cheetah is a large cat but contrasts that fact with the saucer still being far too little for it.
ところが introduces the surprising feature of the object: the lash has been tied back on itself to form a loop.

Full text: original English and Japanese translation

"Ah, yes, of course! Well, a cheetah is just a big cat, and yet a saucer of milk does not go very far in satisfying its wants, I daresay. There is one point which I should wish to determine." He squatted down in front of the wooden chair and examined the seat of it with the greatest attention.

"Thank you. That is quite settled," said he, rising and putting his lens in his pocket. "Hullo! Here is something interesting!"

The object which had caught his eye was a small dog lash hung on one corner of the bed. The lash, however, was curled upon itself and tied so as to make a loop of whipcord.
