Notes Scene 40: Revisiting Monday

Notes on this scene

Through short questions, Holmes confirms that Neville said nothing unusual before leaving, that his wife was astonished to see him, and that the window stood open. She heard only an inarticulate cry and interpreted it as a call for help.

Next scene: Gestures at the Window

Holmes questions Mrs. St. Clair point by point about the open window, Neville's cry, and the movement of his hands. She read the gesture as an urgent appeal for help, but heard no intelligible words. Their careful conversation distinguishes what she actually observed from the meaning she naturally gave it.
