金を拒まれたアーサーは、名誉を失ったままにはならないと別の手段を探しに去る。ホールダーは宝冠を確認して屋敷を見回り、玄関広間の脇窓を閉めるメアリーを見かける。
表現・文法のポイント
- "'Yes, but you would not have me leave it a dishonoured man,' said he.
- would not have me leave it ... は、父も不名誉な状態で去ることを望まないはずだと訴える形である。a dishonoured man は、その時のアーサーの状態を補う。
- As I came down the stairs I saw Mary herself at the side window of the hall, which she closed and fastened as I approached.
- which she closed and fastened の which は広間の脇窓を受ける。closed に加えて fastened とあるため、メアリーは窓の掛け金までかけている。
