ホールダーは、欠けた石の隠し場所を息子が知っていると決めつけ、さらに宝冠の一部を引きちぎろうとしていたと責める。アーサーは侮辱への抗議として沈黙し、父が警察に徹底調査をさせると告げても口を閉ざす。
表現・文法のポイント
- Did I not see you trying to tear off another piece?'
- Did I not see ...? は、目撃したではないかと相手へ迫る修辞疑問である。tear off は、物の一部を力で引きちぎって離す動作を表す。
- 'I shall have this matter probed to the bottom.'
- have this matter probed は、この件を他者に調べさせる使役の受動形である。to the bottom は、真相の奥底まで徹底して、という比喩になる。
