解説　場面 37「夜の戸締まり」

この場面の解説

前夜の音と戸締まりを問われ、メアリーは叔父が声を上げるまで何も聞かなかったと答える。窓は昨夜も今朝もすべて掛け金がかかっていたと確認されると、話題はルーシーの夜間外出へ移る。

"Nothing, until my uncle here began to speak loudly.: Nothing は、何か聞いたかという問いへの「何も」という省略回答である。until 以下が、最初に音を聞いたのは叔父が大声を出した時だと限定する。
I think that you remarked to your uncle last night that she had been out to see him?": remarked to your uncle は、その事実を叔父に伝えたことをいう。had been out to see him は、質問より前に女中が恋人へ会いに出ていたことを示す。

"You heard nothing yourself last night?"

「昨夜、ご自身では何も聞かなかったのですか？」

"Nothing, until my uncle here began to speak loudly. I heard that, and I came down."

「ここにいる叔父が大声で話し始めるまでは、何も。その声を聞いて、下りて来ました」

"You shut up the windows and doors the night before. Did you fasten all the windows?"

「前の晩、戸や窓を閉めたのはあなたですね。すべての窓に掛け金をかけましたか？」

"Yes."

「はい」

"Were they all fastened this morning?"

「今朝も、すべて掛け金がかかっていましたか？」

"Yes."

「はい」

"You have a maid who has a sweetheart? I think that you remarked to your uncle last night that she had been out to see him?"

「恋人のいる女中がいますね。昨夜、彼女がその男に会いに外へ出たと、叔父上に話していたと思いますが？」

メアリーは、叔父の声を聞くまで前夜の物音に気づかず、窓や戸には自分で錠を掛けたと答えた。ホームズはその返答を受け、家の外へ出た人物に話題を移す。彼が確かめたいのは、女中ルーシーとその恋人の関係である。
