商人ブレッキンリッジの屋台で騒ぎが起こり、ネズミのような顔の小男が、ガチョウのことでしつこく尋ねてどなりつけられる。一羽は自分のものだったと訴えても相手にされず、小男は闇の中へ逃げていく。その様子を見ていたホームズは、すかさずワトソンに声をかける。

"Ha! this may save us a visit to Brixton Road," whispered Holmes.「ほう！ これでブリクストン・ロードまで出向く手間が省けるかもしれないぞ」とホームズはささやいた。
"Come with me, and we will see what is to be made of this fellow."「一緒に来たまえ。この男から何が引き出せるか、確かめてみよう」
