紳士の馬車が去ると、今度は小型の馬車が着き、美しい女性が乗り込んで聖モニカ教会へ急げと命じる。ホームズも辻馬車に飛び乗り、二人の後を追う。
表現・文法のポイント
- whether I should not do well to follow them
- do well to ～は「～するのが賢明だ」。should not を含む疑問の形で「追ったほうがよいのではないか」と自問している。否定を使って肯定寄りの考えを表す、古風で遠回しな言い方だ。
- his tie under his ear
- ネクタイが耳の下までずれている、つまり大慌てで身支度した証拠。上着のボタンが半分しか留まっていないことと合わせ、急な呼び出しだったことをホームズは服装の乱れから読み取っている。
- quite too good to lose
- too good to lose は「逃すにはもったいなさすぎる」。too ～ to ... の構文で、quite が強調。見逃す手はない絶好の機会だ、という興奮が伝わる。
背景・時代
- ランドー馬車
- landau は四輪で、幌を前後に開閉できる上等な馬車。自家用の馬車を持つのは裕福さのしるしで、アイリーンが御者付きの馬車を使っていることから、その暮らしぶりがうかがえる。
- 半ソヴリン
- sovereign は1ポンドの金貨で、半ソヴリンは10シリング。御者へのご褒美としてはかなり気前のよい額で、彼女がどれほど急いでいたかがわかる。

"Away they went, and I was just wondering whether I should not do well to follow them when up the lane came a neat little landau, the coachman with his coat only half-buttoned, and his tie under his ear, while all the tags of his harness were sticking out of the buckles. It hadn't pulled up before she shot out of the hall door and into it. I only caught a glimpse of her at the moment, but she was a lovely woman, with a face that a man might die for.

"This was quite too good to lose, Watson. I was just balancing whether I should run for it, or whether I should perch behind her landau when a cab came through the street. It was twenty-five minutes to twelve, and of course it was clear enough what was in the wind.
